Supplying self storage lock distributors

A distributor's margin lives in repeatability — the same part, the same finish, the same packing, order after order. Everything else is secondary.

Who this guide is for

What changes when this is the way you buy.

What changes when you resell rather than install

An operator buys hardware to use. A distributor buys hardware to resell, which changes the requirements in four places:

  • Packaging for the shelf, not for the van — retail-ready packs rather than bulk cartons.
  • Consistency between batches, because a customer who bought one lock will expect the next one to match it.
  • Predictable lead time, because stock commitments are made before the goods arrive.
  • A re-order path, so a repeat order does not become a new development project.

Branding usually costs less than people expect

Many distributors assume that putting their name on a product means tooling. It usually does not. The lowest-cost changes are applied to an existing product: a mark on the lock body, a mark on the key, a printed card, blister or box, or a colour change that the finish accepts.

What buyers like you ask us most

The questions that decide whether an order goes smoothly.

Can we have our own brand without paying for a new mold?

In most cases yes. Branding spans five levels — mark only, mark plus packaging, appearance, configuration, and form. Only the last one requires a new mold. Store-brand programmes normally need the first two or three, which are applied to an existing product.

What packaging options are available for resale?

Bulk carton, plain white box, blister pack and printed card are the usual options, and they change both the unit cost and the minimum quantity that makes the packing worthwhile. Tell us how the product will be sold, not just how it will be shipped.

Will a repeat order look like the first one?

That is the point of recording the specification. Material, finish, packing and branding are held against your account, so a repeat order matches what shipped before rather than approximately resembling it. If your packaging carries a barcode or a customer reference, include it — it is the item most often forgotten and the one that stops goods being received.

How are volume prices structured?

Usually from four variables rather than one quantity break: material, mechanism, packing, and branding or coding. Two quotes that look far apart are often quoting different points on those axes rather than different prices for the same thing.

Can you hold stock for us?

Selected high-runner items may be available from regular production stock, and phased delivery can spread a large order across scheduled shipments so stock arrives closer to when it is sold. We would rather confirm availability per model than imply that everything is always in stock.

Where it usually goes wrong

The four mistakes we see most often in this kind of order — and the way around each.

Deciding packaging last

Packaging is the single most common cause of a delayed shipment, because it is agreed after production is already scheduled. Decide it at the same time as the product.

Assuming private label requires tooling

Most store-brand requirements are mark and packaging, not form. Ask before budgeting for development that may not be needed.

Not recording what shipped

A first order that is correct followed by a repeat order that differs in finish or packing is almost always a specification that was never written down.

Committing to stock before lead time is confirmed

Lead time depends on model, quantity and season, and peak periods move it. Confirm it per order in writing rather than assuming the last order's timing.

How we work with you

What the first conversation looks like, and what we need from you.

We record the specification at the first order

Material, finish, packing and branding are held against your account so re-orders match. This is the part of the relationship that actually protects your margin.

We proof the artwork before production

Cards, blisters and boxes are confirmed as a proof before anything is printed, which is the last cheap moment to change a detail.

We can release stock in phases

Rather than one consignment, the order can be scheduled across shipments — useful when a stock commitment is made before the selling season.

Send us the two things we always ask for

A photograph of the door, and the number of units you need to cover. That is enough for us to confirm the family, the cylinder size and what a first order would look like — before you commit to anything.
